Why Maths Doctor

Education in Oxted

As an increasingly popular commuter town, Oxted is a civil parish in eastern Surrey connected to the capital via a series of penetrating rail links. Home to just 11,314 people, the town is served by a series of state schools and independents. Telling of its home county commuter town status however, the areas schools are prone to high rates of oversubscription. The problem is particularly severe in the state sector- with an estimated 34% of all state secondary schools in the area housing more students than they are equipped for.

Maths is important

All the technology we see around us has been developed by engineers and scientists using techniques and ideas invented by mathematicians. If we hadn’t had any great mathematicians in the past we would almost certainly not have had computers, mobile phones or the internet. Designing computer games are another area which require maths skills along with these other unseen and unadvertised ways including:
- Space missions – Voyager’s journey to the planets could not have been calculated without use of advanced mathematics, nor would we be able to see such crisp, high quality images relayed back to us.
- Travel by aeroplane would not have been possible without the mathematics of control systems and airflow.
- All the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, oceanography) require mathematics to develop theories.
- Medicine relies on statistical analysis to study the cause of illness and utility of new drugs. Mathematics provides the solid foundation for so many aspects of daily life. Even situations that appear quite simple often require comprehensive mathematical analysis.
